This is the inside of my DVD cover. As the box is going to be a clear one, you can see through where the disc is placed in the box. I have chosen to just have a brick wall behind it.

This is my front and back cover of my DVD for 'School Boy'. On the front is the artist, I wanted the artist to be on the front to try and sell himself more. I have chosen for him to be up against a brick wall to reflect the genre of music he creates. I am going to use three images of him, one where he is facing straight on to the camera, one that is from a side angle from the right and the last one the same but from the left.

DVD Cover

For the past three lessons, we have been working individually on our DVD covers. We also have had to start a poster for a magazine. In these we had to include, the artist name, the album title, the release date. For our DVD case we had to make up our own songs instead of using the song names of the artists song we had chosen.

DVD Covers

Before starting our DVD covers we had to sit down and watch our video through again and choose something we could put in our cover and poster to link it to our video. I chose to use our artist on the front of mine. I wanted to put him infront of a brick wall to show the hip hop genre.

Filming

Again in this lesson we decided that whilst two of us filmed, the other two would edit. This time we decided to change locations and wanted to go out of school. Because we couldn'y go too far as we had to be back within an hour, we went to the alley down the road from the school. Here we filmed Lewis mime the song all the way through; twice from the front of him and once from the side. We thought it would be better if we filmed him from two angles and when we edited it, we could put both angles together to make it more effective.

Filming

From watching our footage, as a group we decided we needed to film more where the person in the video is miming the song. To get more out of the lesson, we decided that two of us would stay in the classroom and edit what we had, whilst the other two went out and filmed. Megan and Lee stayed in the classroom and edited and myself and lauren took a camera outside to film Lewis.
We walked around the school trying to find a good place to film without much of a background to fit in with the 'grime' location. The place we found was around the corner behind the sports hall, here we set up the camera, in this shot you could only see a fence and trees behind Lewis, this is what we wanted. As Lewis didnt really know all teh words of the song yet, he only did the bits he did know. After we had filmed, we looked over it. We decided that doing this did work we just needed to get him to say exactly the same words at the right speed for our video.

Tuesday 13th October

In todays lesson we uploaded some more of our footage. We watched it through and noticed that there were some negetive points. We decided that the bit where the words were being read off of a piece of paper did not work; also a tripod should have been used because it looked really shaky because the person in the frame and the camera were moving at the same time.
Also in todays lesson we uploaded our song.

Filming Locations

These are images of another location i found to film Lewis in. I thnk this location also worked well as there was a wired fence behind him, this showed that he was on the street similar to hp hop videos.

Filming Locations

These are images of a loaction i filmed lewis in. It was down an alley, i think this was a good location to fit in with our genre as there was graffiti on the wall next to him, this links in with the hip hop culture.

Changing Our Storyboards

When it came to filming what we had in our storyboards, as a group we decided that what we had done was to hard and wasnt going to work. This meant that we had to change our idea completely and create new storyboards to fit this idea. We started off by sitting down as a group and planning other ways in which we could go about creating our video. By using different effects on the video could make our video more exciting to watch. For example, spilt screening is a good example of this as we could show both artists at the same time.

Changing Our Story Boards

In our lesson we sat down with miss and we spoke about what was actually happening in our storyboards. We noticed that they were more like a film, this means that we have to change them again. We are going to add more close ups instead of long and mid shots like it is now.

Filming

The second time we went filming it was just Lee, Charlotte and myself. We decided to film the couple bits here because there isnt many times Charlotte is on frees with us. I filmed the parts of him and his girlfriend as they walked along together, these were also going to be flashbacks.

Filming

The first time we went filming we all went together, we filmed lee crossing the road for the part of the video that was going to be a flashback. This was hard because there was quite alot of cars that were getting in the way, however we did manage to get some done.

Who was in our video

Finding people to be in our video was really hard, we now have to change our idea because they dont want to do it anymore. This is means we have to change our storyboards again.
Just before planning what would happen in our video, we sat down as a group and watched the official video of Hold On, we found out that the real video didnt really tell the story and it was performance and just of the artists singing to the camera. we wanted to do the opposite and use the words of the song to give them more meaning.

Shooting Schedule

This is the shooting schedule for filming out story boards. Within this we have planned who is filming, when were filming, where were filming and what were filming. We have also added any extra information that we need to check such as, making sure the people are free that we need to film.

Original Storyboards 6 - 10

Original Storyboards 1 - 5

These were our first storyboards for our original idea. When it came to filming these, we realised it was not going to work so we had to change our idea completely.

Story Boards

Even through we found it hard at first to come up with an idea. When we decided what we wanted to happen in our video we sat down together, spreading the sheets out between us and worked as a group on different parts of the song together. Doing it this way was easier because it made doing the storyboards quicker.

Story Boards

To begin doing our story boards we had to sit down as a group and decide what we wanted to to happen in our video. because our song is about loosing someone and trying to hold on. We wanted to try and show this in our video.

Coming Up With An Idea

To be able to start planning, we had to sit down as a group and decide what song to do. We all had different genres that we wanted to do so we had to compromise, we decided to go for a song in the genre of grime/hiphop. The song we chose was Lazee Ft. Neverstore - Hold On. In a video of this genre, we would need to used props such as watches or some sort of jewelery. The artsits costume would also need to reflect their lifestlye. Also alot of focus in the vidoe would be on teh artists themselves.

CD Covers

These are three CD covers of artists from our genre. From all there of them you can see that the artist themselves are the main point of interest on the front. The artist is made the be seen as very successful whether it be throuh how they look of what they are wearing or have. For example, 50 Cents cover is off himself with his shirt off, straight away you notice his body. He is also wearing a watcing and a belt, these all link in the the genre.

Dizzie Rascal - Dance With Me

This is a video of Dizzie Rascal, his music is from this genre.
In this image you can see he is wearing a shiny jacket, the lighting is also dark and what you would expect from this genre. You can also see he is in a club, this is a typical place where you would see a person like this.

This is his video 'Dance With Me'

50 Cent - Cant Shop

From these images you can see that his costune is exactly what you would expect from a person of this genre, big jackets, hats and a ring. He also is filmed next to a big car this shows his wealth and success. Alot of the video focuses on 50 Cent himself, this could show how he is idolised for what he does.

This is his video 'Candy Shop'

Our Genre

Grime is a genre of urban music which first came about in East London in the early 2000s, it developed from UK garage, dancehall, and hip hop. Hip hop is a musical genre which developed alongside Hip Hop culture, defined by rapping, DJing, sampling, scratching and beatboxing. Hip hop begun in the South Bronx in the 1970s.

Questionaire

To begin my research, i had to create a questionaire to find out what kind of music people enjoyed listening to and what was the most popular genre. This would help when deciding what genre to choose as a group when we had to create our own videos. I tried to give out my questionaire to as wide range of people as possible to get the best results i could.

Here are some music videos we watched as a class to see how you can make an effective music video even if you do have a low budget, this gave us some ideas of what we could do for ours. We took notes of what we saw in each video.

Hold On Lyrics

I sing out for all of you
with no one to hold on to
for all the broken hearts out there
waiting for someone to be near.
Hold on, Just hold on

To my people listen up
When I miss somebody
When she need somebody
When she had somebody
Somebody to somebody
That made you feel like somebody

That somebody is calling
You need somebody
Heartbroken I’ve been indeed

Whenever I miss that someone
I try not to think hard cuz then the tears come
and the tears run down your cheek
you can’t speak bubububut sudden’ sudden’ the pain increase.
Cuz you’re messed up fed up stressed up cuz they up and you’re down and messed up

Yeah what don’t cry my day
I swear I’m near, I care.
I’m here right here.
Your love is here right here

I sing out for all of you
With no one to hold on to
For all the broken hearts out there (for all you broken hearts out there)
Waiting for someone to be near

To my people listen up
When I miss somebody
When she need somebody
When she had somebody
Somebody to somebody
That made you feel like somebody
That somebody is calling
You need somebody

16 and my knees hasn’t gone wild
My good friend homie Big Phil had to die
I had to fill a room that was full before

I need I lover and I fell like I need it and yes I
I need ti straight to put me thru.

So I had to (hold on)
to my emotions and remember my dues.
Now I’m 22 got a romance
I made some I had some I lost some friends

At the end I gotta (hold on)
So it wasn't to annoying to arrive at the end

I sing out for all of you
With no one to hold on to (don’t feel like you’re alone out there)
For all the broken hearts out there (I’m here)
Waiting for someone to be near.

Sometimes I gotta
Sometimes you gotta
Sometimes she gotta
Sometimes they gotta
Sometimes we gotta
Sometimes I gotta
Sometimes we gotta
Sometimes she gotta
Sometimes they gotta

I sing out for all of you
With no one to hold on to (sounds of the beautiful)
For all the broken hearts out there (the one and only)
Waiting for someone to be near.
I sing out for all of you
with no one to hold on to
for all the broken hearts out there
waiting for someone to be near.
Hold on…just hold on.

The lyrics in this song could have alot of meaning behind them. This means we coudl show them in different ways in our video. The words are very easy to understand and tell a story, this allows us to be able to tell a story in our video. The words 'Hold On' are effective as you can show this in many ways.

Graphic Discontinuity

This helped us in the creation of our video as it made us think about how we edited our video to fit what the audience would want to see and the different affect each effect would have on the audience.

Tuesday 29 September 2009

This shot is showing the special effects used in this video. it also shows the continuity editing as you can see the man take the coat off that he had on in the previous screen shots.
The special effects were really effective because it shows the juxtaposition of the video.

This also follows continuity as it is teh same place and the man is still wearing the same coat as he was wearing. Even though it is a mid shot, it is an interesting angle to look at as it is unusual.

This screen shot sets the scene for the rest of the video. it is set in a tunnel with cars driving past. The man is wearing a cheap looking coat with fur around the hood. Continuity is shown in the video through him wearing this coat the whole way through.
